Juniper berries provide distinctive flavor to the dish, but you can omit them, if you prefer.
Serves 4
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 ripe but firm Bosc pears, quartered and cored
6 juniper berries, crushed with the side of a large knife and coarsely chopped (optional)
1/2 cup mild honey, such as clover
11/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium--high heat. Add pear wedges, cut sides down, and juniper berries (if using); cook until pears are golden, about 6 minutes. Turn pears onto other cut sides, and cook 1 minute.
Pour in honey, gently swirling skillet to coat pears evenly, and reduce heat to medium--low. Cook until pears are softened and glazed, about 3 minutes. Pour lemon juice over pears and stir syrup to combine.
To serve, divide pears among four dessert plates and spoon syrup over the top.

I found this cookbook fun and a challenge to cook seasonally using local produce. I am cooking my way through "Winter" right now, and having a lovely time trying a variety of spirits. The oyster soup was delicious, a must try!!!

I went threw the book with a fine tooth comb (so to speak) and found so many recipes that I want to try. Especially the chicken recipes. Hope mine turns out as well as yours;
Thanks Martha

This is a great cookbook for easy to prepare meals which are deliciously gourmet in taste. The ingredients, for the most part, are your everyday, easy to find ingredients. Yet the meal that you produce is anything but everyday. The book is set up by season and then by meal. It's easy to follow and the preparation is easy. I am on a strict no simple carb diet and I was able to easily switch out the ingredients that I could have for ones that I could. Although, I did not have to do this often as the recipes have good, healthy ingredients for a healthful diet.

I bought this book as an early holiday gift for myself with some bonus points. It is a very nicely "made" cookbook with quality paper and many wonderful pictures. Nearly every recipe,including side dishes, has a photograph. I just made my shopping list for the next week and plan on making several of the dishes and menus in this cookbook. I felt inspired by several of the recipes and to me that is a sign of a very good cookbook. On the negative side: I think it is unfair to subtitle this book "quick meals to cook for family and friends", many of the recipes are fairly complex and use unusual ingredients. Using the subtitle "quick" I implies to most people that this is a beginner cookbook with simple recipes and it is not. For instance; a sample menu from the book is: Roasted Pumpkin Soup, Cheese Flautas with Cilantro Pesto, Black-Eyed Pea Salad with Baby Greens and Apple-Cranberry Crumble. It sounds like a yummy menu and I plan to execute it, but I am not a beginner cook and I am going to give myself plenty of time to cook it. The soup starts from scratch with a whole pumpkin, the salad has a "from scratch" dressing, the Crumble is also made completely from scratch. I am sure it will take me most of a weekend afternoon to produce this menu. I would not in a million years attempt it after a busy day at work, so you see why I say that the "quick meals" subtitle is misleading. My only other criticism is that 90% of the desserts in the cookbook are fruit based and my husband does not like fruit based desserts, but that is our own personal preference and if you like fruit based desserts you would be happy with the selections in this cookbook. In summary, this is a very interesting and inspiring cookbook for an intermediate chef, or for a beginner who wants to use it to learn new recipes on weekend afternoons when he/she has plenty of time to devote to cooking. Without the misleading subtitle I would have given this book 5 stars.

It is disturbing that this poorly organized cookbook could cost so much. It is difficult to use the book and the recipes are far less than inspirational.
