With all the goodness packed inside—starting with 175 authentic recipes for hidden culinary treasures from Sardinia, Basilicata and beyond—Lidia Cooks From the Heart of Italy is bound to become THE cookbook you reach for when you crave something comforting and delicious.
Best-loved television chef Lidia Matticchio Bastianich’s new love letter to the less familiar regions of her native country celebrates the food and culture she and her daughter, Tanya, have come to know and respect as they prepare the segments of their new PBS® series. Lidia introduces everything from new ways with pasta and their dressings (“The cooks of Emilia-Romagna excel in marrying their golden tagliatelle with a brilliant variety of sauces that perfectly coat the strands and complement the rich flavor and tender texture of the pasta,”) to simple cuisine that makes the most of basic ingredients. For example, in Calabria, she explains, home cooks use onions, olive oil and other common items to craft intensely flavorful dishes, such as Pork Chops Shepherd-Style. What’s more, exquisite landscape photos throughout practically transport you to this magnificent region, even though it’s the recipes that take center stage!

I love Lidia's cookbooks, she is one my fab five of chefs.
I enjoyed reading her memories of family recipes and traveling throughtout Italy. Its not just a cookbook its a cook/history book.
My sons favorite dish is the stuffed shells, mmm mmm good.

Let's keep one thing in mind - this is NOT a basic Italian cookbook. If your looking for instructions for spaghetti and meatballs, this is the wrong place. If, however, you have followed Lidia over the past volumes, you will appreciate and enjoy this latest work. She seems to be showing the nostalgia we eventually feel for times past no matter how successful we have become. The recipes have a sense of being shared from friend to friend and the info on the various regions draws you in as if you had been there and certainly wish you could be. Great book but she omitted Istria where we both have our roots.

My husband saw Lidia make the Tagliatelle and White Meat Sauce...on TV. Now this is a guy who doesn't like to try new things so ... what an opportunity for me to experiment. It was spectacular and so easy. Next we tried Roasted Chicken with Beer and Dumplings with Speck and it was to die for ... it was so delicious. I love reading about the foods - but it is her commentaries about their history and her love of it.. that makes it all so alive and interesting. She makes me want to make one of everything. But for us, next is going to be Rice & Zucchini Crostata maybe with a side of Stuffed Vegetables - or uhhh, just don't know it all sounds devine. Buon Appetito and have fun.

I have tried several of the recipe's in this cookbook. One today that I made for a Valentine's dinner. The Beef Fillet with Wine Sauce was out of this world! My husband said 'Ummmm, this is a keeper!" I have all of her cookbooks and have yet to be disappointed. If you are looking for a cookbook to make food from opening cans and boxes then this is NOT the one for you!
