My New Orleans

John Besh has trained in the most refined kitchens of Europe, but he learned how to cook in the bayou, in his mother’s kitchen. My New Orleans is more than just a cookbook (and a beautiful one, at that!) it’s the James Beard award-winning chef’s love letter to his hometown and to those who helped rebuild it after Katrina. Here he brings us into his world with his own reminiscences of its celebrations and feast days and its unique culinary heritage. What a charming tour guide he is as he shares 200 of the recipes that have shaped his life and flavored his memories: the gumbos & étouffées, the courtbouillons, the jambalayas, beignets, fried oysters, King Cake (a Mardi Gras staple), even his Grandmother Walters’ biscuits. Color photos.

Love this Book

This is one of the most beautiful cookbooks that I have ever owned. I love the recipes and the pictures; my niece and I are looking forward to have a Nawlins' theme dinner at my house.

I doubt I'll cook many recipes from this book, but the ones I will are choice. I am very happy to own this beautiful volume. It makes a wonderful coffee table browsing book as well as a fine addition to my library of cook books.

Coffee Table Book

We try to visit New Orleans once a year, and love the food. I have enjoyed watching John Besh cook on the food network. The book is beautiful, but I think many of the recipes require ingredients that are not easily found, or very costly such as quail, chanterelles and soft shell crabs. None the less I'm glad I bought the book. I will certainly try to prepare some of the recipes, and look forward to eating others the next time we are in the Crescent City.

This is a wonderful book.

I was sick the weekend after this book arrived in the mail, so I spent the weekend with it. There are recipes that I won't be able to make because some of the ingredients are not available to me in PA....but there are recipes I am dying to make. The book read like a novel. It was very well written. I felt like I was back down in New Orleans. The stories are wonderful and the recipes are written so that anyone could follow them. I'm sure I will read this book many times.
