When I first started to read A Game Of Thrones I knew I was in for a special series. The fact that Martin wrote with such raw emotion and action was unlike any fantasy I had ever experienced. When I got to A Storm Of Swords, I knew this would definitely be a series I would read more than once.
For a middle book in a series, A Storm Of Swords was less a bridge connecting it to the next and more a mountain in a range that you had to climb in order to reach the next peak. Many of the main characters reached climaxes and points of no return in this book which made it very exciting and left me eager to read the next one in the series. The emotions and changes the characters went through were extremely believable and helped me feel connected to them (even the characters I don't particularly like) which is something that is rare in such a huge cast that the series presents.
Martin is an amazing author, and I would recommend this series to anyone, even those who are not usual fantasy readers because they will encounter plenty of drama, action, romance and horror as well as the fantastic (which is what this book is, through and through).

In a promo preview on HBO, one of the producers of the Game of Thrones series said they were always just trying to get to season 3, which means to A Storm of Swords, the third book in the series. And now I know why. It might be hard to believe if you've only read the first book or the first two, because they stand up very well on their own, but the extended saga doesn't really get cooking until the third book. To say more might risk a spoiler, and that would be a shame.

Maybe (maybe) the Best of the 3

You obviously need "Game of Thrones" and "Clash of Kings" to set up "Storm of Swords," but when all is said and done, this might very well be the best of the 3. Might not survive as a stand-alone, but then, that's not the point. If you've read the first two, then you will not be disappointed by "A Storm of Swords."

Hugely Epic & Very Rewarding

Storm of Swords is about as epic as a novel can possibly get. Martin expands on his incredible world some more, just as he did in Clash of Kings. He seems to be able to draw from an unlimmited supply of new places and characters that are always vivid, interesting and complex. The new locals we're taken to are very gritty and realistic, while still having a hint of the fantastical about them. The different settings seem to be a mosiac of different places and time periods in history, with some of Martin's magic added to them. While Westeros is Europe in the Middle Ages, we see other parts of the world in this one that are reminisent of Ancient Rome and Egypt. What really makes the books so great though are the characters. He's always able to bring in new characters that are interesting and fun to read about. This allows him to sacrifice other beloved characters for the sake of the story, and while losing a character you've grown attached to can be upsetting at times, it sets the precedent that anything can happen at anytime. This makes the books so thrilling to read. There are times you're almost afraid to turn that page and find out the fate of someone, but this is a rare thing to find. Martin draws the reader in unlike anyone else that I've ever read. This book is tough to take at times, I'll admit, but the overall journey is so worth it. It pulls emotion from the reader unlike anything else. You don't have to be a fan of fantasy to enjoy it either. I'm not, and yet these books are easily among the best I've ever read. One piece of advice though is to already have the next book in the series before you finish which ever one you're reading...you won't want to stop!
