I've had the book for about 2 weeks and have only tried 3 recipes. I must say, the pound cake recipe was to die for! However, I tried 2 entrees and found these recipes to be toned-down as far as spice and fire are concerned. All recipe directions are excellent, lovely book to just sit and read, and a good variety of recipes. I guess it's me - I'm used to heavy-duty, spicey southern dishes. In all fairness to the book, all you really have to do is increase some of the spice measurements and they will truly taste like the deep south!

I made the chocolate cake from this book for my son's birthday. Everyone just loved it. I have to bake it again next week for a friend's birthday. She can't stop talking about it.

I first purchased the 2012 Southern Living recipe cookbook and was going to give it as a gift....until I looked through it. Thankfully, I also ordered this book from the Good Cook. This book saved the day. There was no comparison between the two. The first had a few slick, colorful pages inserted into the middle. This book is chock full. Paper quality, photo quality, and the type of recipes used are all superior. I was proud to give the Heirloom book as a gift and now would like to own one myself. I can see this as a great wedding gift too. It "teaches" the basic ways of preparation one needs to know to develop as a good cook. I would highly recommend it whether a person is just starting out or looking for 'real food' recipes. Well illustrated.
